The running of 26 miles and 300 yards (42.195km) has become the pinnacle of athletic achievement for many people the world over. The proliferation of fun- run marathons includes this annual event in the beautiful Czech Republic capital of Prague, held every May.
Starting from Prague's Old Town Square (Staromìstské námestí) the course winds through Prague to end back in the same location. While there are major international racers that take part, the race is also open to amateur runners, although the organisers set a six- hour time limit.
By way of encouragement, the route is lined with groups of musicians and entertainers - an extension of the PIM Serenade which overtakes the whole weekend, so the event is not just for participants. Budding runners can register at the PIM Expo area set up in Wenceslas Square (Václavské námestí) from early May, open between 10am and 9pm every day.
New technology, by way of a microchip attached to competitors' ankles, means that finishing times can be text- messaged to their mobile phones as soon as they pass the finishing line! Also, competitors get free transport on Prague's metro, tram and bus networks on the day, simply by showing their race start number.
